This stage of engagement is now closed

Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback between 23 June - 27 July 2025. The Engagement Summary Report will be uploaded here once completed.

Your feedback will help us create a design that reflects the local community's priorities, and that can be enjoyed by others for years to come. We will seek your feedback on the draft design later this year.

Funding for the construction of the playspace will be considered by Council in the 2026/27 budget.

About this project

We are designing a new playspace at Jacaranda Road Reserve in Wheelers Hill.

As part of a separate project, we are also designing and installing fitness equipment at the reserve to offer residents free fitness opportunities close to where they live.

Design guidelines

Jacaranda Road Reserve is classified as a 'pocket' playspace, which means it is designed with these features in mind:
  • 3-5 items of play equipment

  • Toddlers - preschool ages

  • Shorter visits by locals (within 400m)

A playground's classification also determines the budget and scope of the upgrade.

Some features that are not in scope for local playspaces include:

  • Public toilets: local playspaces are designed for local residents and shorter stays. District and regional playspaces include public toilets as they attract families who live further away, and typically stay for longer.
  • Sand pit: sand and water are limited to regional- or district-level playspaces due to high maintenance levels.
  • Shade sails: we aim to make use of existing trees or plan new trees and vegetation to create natural shade.

Monash has 5 playground classifications that range from small pocket parks through to large regional destination playgrounds.

A playground’s classification directly informs its scope and size and it also guides how it is maintained.

If a district- or regional-scale playground is located in a neighbourhood, a series of smaller pocket or local playgrounds for toddlers should also be provided in the local area. These pocket and local playgrounds allow small children to have a place to play without potentially feeling intimidated by older children rushing about them.
