In 2025, we listened to feedback from Monash businesses to help us understand specific issues and opportunities for the local economy. We've used this to draft a strategy with real actions to grow our local economy, with a focus on achieving positive economic outcomes and long-term economic growth to support businesses and residents of the City of Monash.

Now we're checking, do the actions in the strategy reflect the needs of our diverse business community?

With over 25,000 businesses in the City of Monash, it's important that Council provides the support and opportunity to businesses both current and prospective to grow and prosper as much as possible.

How was this draft strategy created?

From May – July 2025, we gathered input from key business and industry stakeholders, as well as conducting a business survey on Shape Monash.

That feedback has directly informed our draft Economic Development Strategy, highlighting to us what our businesses felt were important for the future planning and initiatives that contribute to a vibrant economy.

What we heard:

Key themes in the feedback we heard from businesses in 2025 were:

  • More events and networking opportunities
  • Emphasis on attracting new businesses and investment
  • Supporting more visitors to Monash.

What we did:

Our draft strategy’s action plan responds to these main themes in the following ways:

  • Build on the success of our events and networking programs, such as Start Up, Invest and Grow and Monash Women’s Business Network.
  • Develop an investment prospectus and investment attraction.

  • Activations to promote nighttime economy and more visitors to our major activity centres.

Why do we need an Economic Development Strategy?

City of Monash has more than 25,000 businesses. Our region spans everything from large multinational and industrial giants, to a vibrant technology and health sector to thriving local traders to startups, small businesses and sole traders.

Because of this, it’s important that Council has a planned, considered and strategic approach to how we provide support and opportunities, so local businesses and industries can grow and prosper as much as possible.

What is economic development?

Economic Development means helping a local area’s economy become stronger and improving the quality of life for all.

Economic Development can come in many forms – from unique programs to activations for retail areas to long-term strategic planning.

Economic Development is about local government partnering with businesses, industry and community groups to work together to create better conditions for economic growth, employment opportunities and wellbeing.

Share your feedback

We are inviting you to provide your feedback on strategy, particularly our actions and the vision.

Complete the survey below by Wednesday 10 June or in person at our upcoming events.

What is the decision we are making?

To determine whether the updated Monash Economic Development Strategy meets the needs of the businesses and industries in Monash for final endorsement by Council.

What will we do with the information collected?

Your feedback will help us finalise the strategy before going to Council for final endorsement.

What can change because of your feedback?

  • How we prioritise and schedule the actions in our strategy.
  • The wording of the vision, which provides a big picture guide to how we support the local economy, community and industry.

What can't change because of your feedback?

  • State government planning and regulations: some actions involve Victorian Government planning and regulations, which Council will support. These are not actions we lead and action ourselves.
  • Key themes identified in the strategy: the key themes were identified based on feedback in July 2025 from businesses, industries and other regional and relevant stakeholders.

Who can provide feedback?

Anyone can provide their feedback on the strategy.

You don't need to be a business owner or operator.
