Project update

Tennis, futsal, pickleball – Carlson Reserve multi-purpose courts on Clayton Road are serving up something for everyone!

Open to the public, the new courts include line markings and goal spaces for tennis, netball, basketball, soccer training, futsal and pickleball, as well as court-side LED sports lighting to allow for evening practice.

Supported by the Victorian Government, the impressive facility was officially opened on Friday 10 May 2024, where several community members enthusiastically tried out some pickleball – one of the fastest growing sports in Australia.

The $726,310 project caps off a multi-year, three-stage project to transform Carlson Reserve into a thriving active recreation hub for the Clayton area.

In Stage one, Council constructed a Neighbourhood-standard playground, with exciting play equipment, a mini outdoor exercise station, water fountain and seating to complement the existing barbecue and picnic table.

Stage two saw the creation of a new landscaped forecourt area where people can sit and relax, with new trees, bench seating, table tennis and chess tables and bicycle racks.

There’s even more to come, with works underway on a new sports pavilion with amenities for local clubs, and consultation currently open on a new mural, with designs that reflect the rich cultural diversity Clayton. Consultation on the mural closes Friday 24 May.

Visit the Carlson Reserve revitalisation page for more information on this three-stage project.

Round 2 Consultation (2022) - lighting

We proposed to include four upgraded LED sports lighting towers with lighting levels of 250 lux, positioned at the corners of the court.

There is a timer on the court lights in the evenings, as there was with the previous tennis courts. Time for the lights is limited to 11pm on weekdays and 9pm on weekends. The courts will remain a free public facility, with no bookings required.

The lighting will be designed in accordance with the Australian Standard AS4282-2019 to minimise lighting spill into neighbouring properties.

Consultation closed Monday 11 July 2022. Your feedback helped inform our final concept plan and Council’s grant application.
