We've been listening to your feedback about the food waste recycling service, to make sure it works for residents and helps us divert food waste from landfill.

Placing food scraps in your food and garden waste bin is one of the best ways we can work together to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and lower the impact of climate change.

However, we've heard your concerns regarding smells and insects with having food waste collected fortnightly, and we know not all residents are recycling their food scraps.

By changing how often rubbish and food and garden waste bins are collected, we can continue to collect food scraps weekly and send them for composting, rather to landfill. This can also support residents to recycle more of their food waste – and we’ll be here to support you on this journey.

No. Our neighbouring Councils, Boroondara and Glen Eira, have made this switch already.

Other Melbourne Metropolitan Councils will also be changing to a weekly food and garden waste collection in the coming year.

Since introducing a food waste recycling service in July 2020, we’ve heard from residents about how the amount of waste in their rubbish bins has decreased. However, we are also aware not all residents are recycling or composting their food waste.

When food is sent to landfill, it breaks down without oxygen and causes methane, a harmful greenhouse gas, which contributes to climate change.

By reducing how often rubbish bins are collected, we hope to encourage more residents to use their food and garden waste bin to recycle food scraps.

It also means the same number of bins continue to go out for collection each week, and we can use the same number of trucks to collect the bins. Along with reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, this will save money in the long-term and help reduce our impact on the environment.

Most rubbish bins shouldn’t smell too much each fortnight, however this can depend on what type of rubbish you have.

If you put all your food scraps in the food and garden waste bin, or compost food scraps at home, this will help to reduce most smells in your rubbish bin.

For households with children in nappies, you could flush baby poo down the toilet before disposing of nappies (flush with toilet paper only; baby wipes cannot be flushed down the toilet). Or try putting the nappies inside two tied up bags.

Pet waste needs to go in your rubbish bin. If you are concerned of smells, you could tie it up inside two bags.

Alternatively, you can compost pet waste at home – if you are already composting food scraps, you will need a separate compost bin for pet waste. If you would like to more about composting pet waste, contact us on mail@monash.vic.gov.au

Eligible properties can receive a food and garden waste bin.

Requests for bins must be made by the property owner/ratepayer. We may need to check you have adequate storage and collection access for the bin before approving your request.

Yes. If your household produces a lot of waste, you can request an extra bin or upgrade your existing rubbish bin to a larger bin size. Costs may apply and would be added to your rates notice.

Yes. If you have upgraded your rubbish bin and no longer need the extra bin space, you can swap your larger rubbish bin for the standard 120L bin size.

Or if you are paying for an extra bin, and no longer need it, let us know.

The costs associated with the upgraded or additional bin will be taken off your rates, once your request has been actioned.

These properties may not have space for food and garden waste bins, or may require additional support to recycle food scraps.

We will work with the Body Corporate or Facilities Manager of these properties, on a case-by-case basis, to help their tenants recycle food scraps and assess whether they could move to a fortnightly rubbish collection in the future.
