Monash is home to almost 12,000 dogs and more than 5,600 cats. We're refreshing our plan for managing them, and we want your feedback.
In recent years we’ve made some big changes including introducing a cat curfew, creating 14 new dog off-leash areas and, from this August, changing pound service providers to Animal Aid in Coldstream.
We know how important our four-legged friends are in Monash, and our refreshed draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026-2029 proposes a focus on education to continue to support those changes, encourage responsible pet ownership and improve compliance with rules for dog and cat owners to:
- Ensure the quick return of lost pets
- Reduce nuisance behaviours
- Prevent risks to safety of people and pets
- Ensure the welfare of pets.
We have identified ways that we can work with pet owners and our community to meet these priorities, and we're inviting your feedback to let us know anything we missed in our draft plan.
After we have reviewed community feedback, a final plan will be presented to Council in the coming months for adoption.
