As part of Monash Council's Street Tree Strategy, residents of Barrington Drive in Ashwood are invited to take part in a survey to let us know what type of tree you'd like to see us plant in your street.

Our Street Tree Strategy helps Council to protect and increase our street tree canopy across Monash. Something we know is very important to our residents because of the role they plan in cooling, shading and beautifying our streets.

Trees identified for removal

When assessing a street that as part of our Street Tree Strategy, we flag trees for removal that are dead, dying, (assessed as having less than 2 years useful life), diseased or dangerous (pose an inappropriate level of risk to people or assets which cannot be reasonably be managed).

These trees are then replaced where appropriate and we also look for other opportunities to plant trees on the street.

Barrington Drive, Ashwood

Following assessment by Council's aboriculture team, a number of street trees on Barrington Drive in Ashwood have been flagged to removal. You can read about these trees and why they're being removed here.

In their place, the team has identified opportunities to plan 16 new trees at the locations on the below map. You can also read the specific addresses of these sites here.

Species for replanting

Two species have been identified by Council's aboriculture team as most appropriate for Barrington Drive in Ashwood, and residents are now invited to pick your preferred option.

Tristaniopsis laurina 'Luscious' (Luscious Kanooka)

An Australian native. Leaves are dark green, shiny and large. New growth starts in a distinctive copper colour and further interest appears over time with branches developing deep purple coloured bark which peels back to reveal a smooth, cream trunk. Flowers are yellow and sweetly perfumed, appearing in clusters through summer.

Following feedback from residents, Council will plant the preferred species on both sides of the road in appropriate locations.

Mature size: 8m high by 4m wide.

Lagerstroemia indica x L. fauriei 'Tuscarora' (Tuscarora Crepe Myrtle)

This deciduous tree has small oval shaped green leaves that turn a stunning reddish/orange in the autumn and beautiful coral red crinkled flowers that are borne in late summer. The smooth bark is beige coloured with red-brown streaks.

Mature size: 4m high by 5m wide.

Form: v-shaped.
