Project update

Thank you to those who submitted feedback on the Safe Pedestrian Project. The project will commence in July 2022 and, weather permitting, works are expected to be completed in October 2022.

Overview

Council has been successful in receiving funding from the Department of Transport Safe Pedestrians Program to improve pedestrian safety at various intersections within the activity centre area.

A high number of pedestrian incidents are occurring within the Centre, with an initial round of treatments undertaken in 2017/18 to assist with modifying driver behaviour and facilitate safe pedestrian crossing locations.

Additional works were required to further improve pedestrian safety in the precinct and council was successful in receiving funding from the Department of Transport Safe Pedestrians Program to achieve that outcome at various intersections within the activity centre.

We sought feedback on the proposed works in early 2022.

The tender for the project works was awarded in April 2022 to Urban Civil Construction Group Pty Ltd.

Works started in late-June 2022 and will deliver new, raised zebra crossings at the intersection of Atherton Road and Drummond Street, and Atherton Road and Palmerston Grove; new road humps along Portman Street and Chester Street; and a roundabout upgrade at Portman and Chester Streets.

Threshold treatments - coloured and/or textured road surface treatments that contrast with the adjacent roadway, alerting drivers to changed road conditions – will be carried out at the intersection of Portman and Station streets, and Burlington and Hanover streets.

Weather permitting, works are expected to be completed in mid-September.

This proposal is to enhance pedestrian safety by providing a priority along the desirable pedestrian crossing points at the intersections. To further improve pedestrian protection at existing crossing points, we propose to install traffic islands at each end of the zebra crossing where there is sufficient road space to do so. The proposed treatments at various locations are shown on the map below. Click on a hotspot for more information or view the more detailed plans below.
