We are planning for the future of the Oakleigh Golf Course site and from September to November 2023 we invited our community to help us do this.

At its meeting on 26 September, Council resolved to seek feedback from the community on two options for the land:

  1. Retain the 9-hole golf course, or
  2. Transform the site into a regional park.

Importantly, Council is committed to the land remaining as open space and no other options are being considered.

Feedback is now closed, with a consultation report to be prepared for Councillors to make a decision on the future form of the site. We expect this decision in early 2024.

Background

We are considering our future open space and sporting infrastructure needs to ensure we are making the most of the space we have available in Monash.

Our open space strategy identified the need to meet the current and future needs of the community close to where they live work and play by providing a range of functions for social, physical, and environmental experiences.

The future of the Oakleigh Golf Course has been examined from time to time due to its usage and close proximity to other public and private courses. In recent years, there has increased focus on the activation of open space including the potential use of golf courses for flexible or non-organised recreation activities. Funding was provided in 2021/22 to further investigate potential opportunities to maximise the use of the Oakleigh Golf Course for uses other than golf.

Consulting with our community will help to ensure that a crucial Council asset is providing the highest value and community benefit possible.

We understand and respect the important role that golf has played at the site for many years, and Council will directly engage with Golf Australia, Oakleigh Golf Club, Oakleigh Veterans Golf Club, and casual golfers to ensure the views of current users are acknowledged and considered.

Whichever option Council decides, golf will remain at Oakleigh Golf Course for at least the next five years.
