We want to create more opportunities for people to get involved in community sport. That's why we’re proposing sportsground lighting so local soccer teams can safely train in the evenings during the winter season.

Larpent Reserve currently has no lighting. As a result, sports clubs are unable to train or practise on the pitch during winter when daylight hours are short.

This limits participation and makes it harder for players to access regular training times.

What we're proposing

  • Six lighting poles

    • 20m poles to isolate the light more towards the soccer pitch
    • Poles will be 14-35m from the boundary.
  • Energy-efficient LED lighting

    • Better directs light towards the pitch.
    • Minimises spillover into neighbouring properties.
    • Less impact on wildlife.
  • Limited hours of use

Outlined in the Sports Floodlighting Policy, lights will be used on:

    • Weekdays until 10pm
    • Weekends until 6pm

This project is subject to Council’s budget review process. It is proposed for the 2026-27 capital works program.

Light pole locations

The pole locations have ben chosen to ensure optimal lighting is achieved while also minimising the spill that is experienced.

Light pole locations are on the interactive map below. You can also view a detailed map in the document library.

The light poles will be set back from the reserve boundary, away from properties.

The poles will be between 14 to 30 metres from the fence line.

The poles will be 20 metres tall, to isolate the light more towards the soccer pitch.

No more than 10 lux will be spilled outside the reserve. The lights have been chosen to have the least impact on local residents and wildlife. They use a special flat glass design that stops glare and unwanted light.

The design complies with the Australian standards for controlling the obtrusive effects of outdoor lighting (AS/NZS 4282:2023). These standards set clear limits on the light spill, glare, and sky glow from outdoor lights.

Below is a render of the lights at the reserve at night.

*A lux (lx) measures the total amount of light that falls on a surface, or the 'illuminance'. 1 lux is equal to the light of a single candle.

The proposed lights will deliver at least 100 lux (lx) on the soccer pitch to meet the required standards for community sport. The design also complies with the Australian Standard for managing the obtrusive impact of outdoor lighting (AS/NZS 4282:2023), and no more than 10 lux will be spilled into residential properties.

A lux (lx) measures the total amount of light that falls on a surface, or the 'illuminance'. 50 lux is equal to the light from a family living room. 1 lux is equal to the light of a single candle.

A lux (lx on the plan) measures the total amount of light that falls on a surface, or the 'illuminance'.

50 lux is equal to the light from a living room. 1 lux is equal to the light of a single candle.

Training under sports lighting will be permitted until 10pm on weekdays and 6pm on weekends in accordance with Council’s Sports Floodlighting Policy.

The aim of this project is:

  • To allow for safe evening training during the winter season and foster greater participation outcomes in community sport.
  • Ensure Council grounds are well maintained and can accommodate the rising rates of community sport (specifically soccer) in the City of Monash.
