As part of Monash Council's Street Tree Strategy, the trees in High Street Road have been nominated for renewal.

Our Street Tree Strategy helps protect and increase our street tree canopy across Monash - something we know is very important to our residents because of the role it plays in cooling, shading and beautifying our streets.

Why does Council identify trees for removal?

When assessing a street that is part of our Street Tree Strategy, we flag trees for removal that are dead, dying (assessed as having less than five years useful life), diseased or dangerous (pose an inappropriate level of risk to people or assets which cannot be reasonably be managed).

These trees are then replaced where appropriate and we also look for other opportunities to plant trees on the street.

High Street Road, Glen Waverley

Our arborists have completed individual tree assessments based on the above criteria and, in High Street Road, we are proposing to remove 16 trees and will be planting a total of 100 trees, which includes planting 79 trees in currently vacant locations.

Species for replanting

A combination of two different species for replanting have been identified by Council's arboriculture team, due to being the most appropriate for the conditions. These species are explained below.

Corymbia citriodora - to be planted on the median strip.

A beautiful, tall growing Corymbia with a distinctive, often powdery white to grey coloured bark which curls and flakes off in spring. Its leaves are green, long and slender with an amazing, strong lemon fragrance when crushed. Its strong scent is a distinguishing attribute, with the essential oils produced from this variety often being used in fragrances as well as insect repellents. In summer and autumn, feathery white flowers appear, making it a good source of food for honey bees.

Corymbia citriodora 'Scentuous' - to be planted on nature strips.

This is a slightly narrow-domed Corymbia (syn. Eucalyptus), that doesn't shed its branches. It has a smooth trunk that may be slightly mottled. The bark is a pinky-salmon in colour. Leaves are narrow and highly aromatic when crushed smelling strongly of lemon. This tree features lovely cream-coloured flowers in summer.
